Roman Remains

Am amused by the list of Roman remains in Chester on wikitravel.org:
  • Chester Amphitheatre
  • Chester Walls
  • Roman Gardens
  • Spud-u-Like

The most amusing thing is that it's entirely correct.

Indeed it is.

(Has fond memories of trailing in the wake of [livejournal.com profile] sidhe_woman through a very post restaurant in Salisbury with her waving away waiters with cries of "No, no, we're only here to look at the carvings...")

So, what is it about the Spud-u-Like?

There is a vault at the back of a store that used to be the Bookland bookstore further up the Rows; but when Bookland closed August '06, it got taken over by, I believe, a boutique. Dunno if they allow access to the Vault there any more, because I've not been yet.

Though I could well go there next time I bring Nai along. I can use her as an excuse to go look in the back. :)

Haven't been back there lately to check on what they're doing with the Amphitheatre. Also, they've not mentioned the Minerva shrine and the remains of the old Roman quarry across the river, now a public park and play area on the banks of the Dee.

They do, or still did at Easter '07. It's part of the store and it's a boutique cum hippy tat shop so quite suitable.
