I was about to add "What about Walsall?", then I realised you weren't at Novacon this year.

In any case, Walsall's a town, not a city.

Ditto Reading. Wiki: "Reading is not yet officially a city, having missed out during the millennium celebrations when the Queen instead granted Brighton & Hove city status in 2000." But this hasn't stopped the Borough Council or Reading Transport from referring to it as a city.

I've heard it said Reading is now the largest town in England, though whether that's by population or area, I don't know.

It certainly isn't area as the borough itself is quite small. I suspect it is urban conurbation, with all the areas that we tend to refer to as Reading but are in fact part of the rural district councils around Reading included. This pushes the population of Reading up from the official 180,000 or so to well over 250,000 and possibly more these days, I believe.
