Amused to see (in Waterstone's on Picadilly) a copy of Jeeves and the Feudal Spirit on the Cyberpunk table. Is Waterstone's finally ready to admit the seminal influence of P G Wodehouse on early Cyberpunk? Will we have to rewrite the whole history of 20th century science fiction? Or did a customer just dump it on the nearest table after changing his mind about buying it?

I left it there, in the hope of sparking some cross-fertilisation between genres. Although I think it might work rather better to sneak a copy of The Diamond Age onto the shelves with the Wodehouse.

Edit: Corrected the title (from Jeeves and the Feudal System). Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] the_maenad for the correction.

Hmm. I am now stuck with a picture of Woodhouse doing genetically-enhanced cyber pigs in Blandings, while Jeeves jacks in to burn chrome, who just happens to be another of Bertie's aunts...

I think you'll find it's the Feudal Spirit. Though the thought of Jeeves lecturing Bertie on mediaeval sociology does have a certain appeal...

"In the middle ages, a large percentage of the population were villeins."

"Well, really! I mean, dash it, Jeeves, I know some of our ancestors were a bit prone to highway robbery and piracy, but surely they can't all have been such utter blackguards as that?"
