Martens are mustelids IIRC - these are martins.

We saw a large (30+ centimetres) terrapin in a pond in Croydon a couple of weeks ago. Quite a surprise. Won't a cold winter (like we used to have 20 years ago) kill them off?

It's more likely to be a cold summer that kills them; they're hibernating anyway in winter. But they seem to do pretty well, although supposedly (and fortunately) it's not quite warm enough for them to breed in the UK.
