Species Update

I was lucky enough to get some fabulous action shots of a new species this afternoon.

Here we have a grey heron and (I think) a common frog.



By my own rules, dead animals don't count, but the frog was definitely wriggling.







And here are a few more of the villain of the piece, because everyone likes heron photos.











Oh, and I forgot to link to this week-old picture of a dunnock, which I'd scored but not photographed earlier.

So the score is now 40 birds, 2 mammals and one amphibian.

Those heron-in-flight pictures are excellent.

If it were me, I'd hesitate to count the frog, not because of what happened to it but because of uncertainty on species. Still, I suppose you can say "a species of frog" and leave it at that until/unless you see more frogs.

There's only one species of frog in the UK, but it could in theory be a toad. However, it's a bit early in the year for toads.

It is emphatically not too early in the year for toads. Crapauds are breeding right now, as evidenced by the croaking coming from the pond right now. In fact they've been at it for weeks. Sadly there are not enough females to go around. A feeling I know all too well.

I'm pretty sure that is a frog. My sister was saying the other day that the frog orgies in her garden pond have begun again, so they're obviously around.
