Allegedly, the Royal Mail has suspended a postman for telling people living on his round how to opt out of the "Door to Door" service that delivers unaddressed advertising material with your post. Wouldn't it be a shame if the publicity around this inspired a few million people to email optout@royalmail.co.uk with their postal addresses and ask for the form to opt out?

I already opted out - which is why I don't understand why I still get the stuff via the postman! But I'll do the necessary - thanks.

Is there somewhere we can petition for this postman's reinstatement? He did everybody a favour! (Except perhaps his employers....)

I opted out using the postal preference service - which didn't include the Post OFfice at that time. Hmmm.

It could be that he's been suspended not for telling people about the opt out but for sending his own unsolicited mail...

Also, of course, he's only been suspended, not sacked. Presumably his key motivation was that if half his round opted out, he'd have pounds less to carry each day.

Done. Thought i'd register with the Mailing Preference Service (http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/) while i was at it, and was told:

We are currently experiencing an exceptionally heavy number of registration requests - please return to the site shortly
.

We win!

Just for info - there is also the Telephone Preference Service at www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/ for those who don't want to be bothered by unsolicited telephone marketing calls.

And while we're on the subject - remmeber to tick the no-brainer box on the electoral register saying that you don't want your details to be included in the amalgamated list they sell to all and sundry (you'll still be available for personal checks).

Actually, that's a good reminder. What with living in a rented flat, there tends to be quite a bit of rubbish for former tenants. Cheers.
