There's a new pledge on PledgeBank for people to sign up to pay £5 per month to set up a UK digital rights organisation. If they get 1,000 pledges, then it will happen. 31 so far, including me, but it was only created yesterday.

I'm not totally convinced. The main digital rts issues are IPR and privacy/interception/surveillance and they cover that between them. Yes, there's no SINGLE organisation covering everything - but the resources for this sort of stuff are already very stretched in the UK.

this was more or less exactly the reason for this; existing organisations and attempts in the UK have suffered from a lack of cash to actually do much; in the USA a few doners have made a massive difference but here that sort of "rich entreprenuer" hasn't felt willing to make a substantial donation, so this proposal was made and generally accepted by the meeting ...

But how *is* it going to be funded then? Exactly :-) Cory is already here as EFF outreach and that seemed a sensible way to go, given as you say the lack of big dot.com donors here. Other attempts to fund raise are just likely to bleed off the other, well established UK organisations. the best bet maybe would be to place it in a university I imagine (hmmm) - if it's really necessary.

OK. I;ve actually looked at the proposal. Hm, £5,000 a month? I guess that does butter a few parsnips, though not that many..
