Micropayments?

So, Google are apparently developing an online payment system, but not one that competes with PayPal. Are we going to see a micropayment system that actually works and that people will use? Such a thing would transform the web, though I'm not sure if it would be for better or worse.

I wouldn't be surprised if such a thing works on LJ, or if it spreads to other sites. I can't see it transforming the web beyond adding a certain amount of detail.
