So The Register had a story on how Google Maps UK lets you search for anything near to a location, including brothels. Hmm, I thought, I wonder what it will think is a brothel near to home.

[livejournal.com profile] sneerpout may not be too happy with the result.

And here is the result. I've halved the size to make the file smaller, but I trust that answer B is still legible.

My home postcode brothel search gives:

Sheffield City Council
0114 272 6444 - 1.8 mi N
BBC Radio Sheffield
0114 273 1177 - 1.5 mi N
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Exeuctive
01709 515151 - 1.9 mi N

which I take as clear indication that the Millennium Paradise Sauna at the bottom of our street has definitely closed down, which we weren't sure about.

If you search 'brothel' and 'manchester', result G is British Broadcasting Corporation.

Tony Berry used to live within a minute's walk of a pub, a massage parlour and a chocolate warehouse. All his potential cravings catered for, although I don't think he even used the pub.

A fine example of the problems of...

I suspect IWPR has written articles about the forced sex trade in the Balkans. The same search around here highlights Amnesty International for what I guess will be much the same reason...

I get BBC Radio Cambridgeshire ("A BBC Radio Cambridgeshire investigation has found a flourishing and growing sex industry in the county"), the Medical Research Council (with an extract making me wonder what "brothel-broth" was, but it's a paper on "Units of representation in visual word recognition"), a shop ("occupies the site of a medieval brothel"), and a pub ("having at times been a brothel, a gin palace").

"The web pages below contain brothel and addresses near cambridge" section does start off with escort agencies - from www.yellowpages.co.nz, so I think the localization of which Cambridge could be improved.

The place where Simo and I used to share a flat used to be a brothel. (Strange house. Pebbledashed on the inside...)
Occasionally furtive men would appear and get very confused.

The one and only result I get is Kent County Constabulary HQ in Maidstone. Make of that what you wish.

I'd thought that Southern California would be better served than Sheffield, but our nearest brothel turns out to be 29 miles away. But at least the "Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences" comes in at number 3 on the list, which shouldn't be much of a suprise.
