Here's your new legislation for today.

Ownership of the means of production by the workers has largely come about, thanks to their pension funds, endowment policies and unit trusts. Control of the means of production has stayed with the small number of fund managers who actually get to vote in company AGMs.

From now on, every collective investment vehicle with a total fund value in equities of £50 million or more has to hold elections every three years for one or more representatives who will exercise the fund's votes on behalf of the investors. Their mandate will be to represent the views of the investors who elected them, and they will not be required to vote with the sole intention of maximising the fund's value, as fund managers are at present. The representatives will be paid by the fund for the work they undertake, which is not expected to be full time. Anyone is eligible to stand for election provided they have not been employed within the past five years, either directly or indirectly (e.g. as a consultant), by the fund management company or by any company which represents more than 1% of the fund's total holdings.

Dictatorship recognises no weekends. More legislation tomorrow.

I like that idea - it has a lot of merit in a Post-Enron world. Sadly, I think you'd see the rapid development of a class of professional representatives.

Does [personal profile] flickgc have any pending legislation?

You do realise that your dictatorship is doomed to last only until it is My turn? It would be better to be prepared, and write your laws accordingly. Therefore the following sentences should be appended to this legislation: The election losers will have their brains neatly packaged up and sent to [livejournal.com profile] fluffcthulhu. Anyone found breaking this law will be eaten in a slightly more unpleasant way than everyone else.

Making such preparations will ensure that you are not eaten last.

Of course, people could invest in ethical funds in the first place...

Most people would, I suspect, vote to have their funds managed solely to make as much cash as possible...

You might be right. However, as part of a 'balanced portfolio' or whatever they call it, some of my money is in an ethical fund, and some other of my money (only a little) is in the CAMRA Investment Club, investing only in real ale. Oddly, that fund is going great guns at the moment; and CIC manages to effectively influence many of the brewers it invests in.
