iPhone 4

If you're tired of reading about the latest iPhone, which is perfectly understandable, I'd suggest that you stop reading now.

My new toy arrived today, after six days in transit from China. And it's very shiny.

The display is, as expected, very very nice indeed, and I suspect that I'll end up doing all my reading on the phone rather than using the iPad when at home. It's the best computer display of any kind, but I fear it will take a while until they can make one big enough for an iPad (or something larger) at an affordable price.

It does have the grip of death -- if I grip the bottom of the phone, it goes from four bars to one bar -- but my old iPhone 3G does exactly the same, and I suspect most mobile phones are similar. It's just been blown up out of proportion.

Haven't really given the camera a field test yet, but the extra speed and the multi-tasking are nice to have.

For those who are curious, I got an unlocked one and will be using it on Three on pay-as-you-go. Except when out of the country, that should cost me about £5 per month (which will get me 150MB of data, 25 texts, unlimited Three-to-Three calls and £5-worth of other calls and texts). That makes the total cost of ownership over two years £310 per year, less resale value, which is substantially cheaper than buying one on a contract.

More likely it goes from 2/3 to 1, and will do when they upgrade the algorithm for the cell strength.

Hmmm... not necessarily, as the CEO of Nokia and when I saw him last week, the CEO of Sprint, will be happy to tell you. The real mistake Apple made was making the rim of the device part of the antenna assembly which basically makes the problem much worse than it would if the antenna was sensibly insulated.

If you're using a case, then the problem should mostly go away.

Interestingly I'm trying to recreate on a 3GS but so far the signal strength is pretty consistent at 4 bars.

To be fair, signal strength isn't much of an indicator of anything really for voice networks - either you're Camped onto a cell or you're not. The only place I can see it having an impact is in bandwidth on WCDMA throughput where your ability to hog multiple bands is what throttles your throughput.

The i4's display has the same pixels-per-inch resolution as Nokia and other high-end smartphones have had for the past few years. It does have a Shiny! but meaningless name (Retina Display!) which makes it so much better. It is a great and long-overdue improvement over the cheap 320x480 half-VGA displays in the previous iPhone models though.

Ditto Dave on the antenna thing -- who was it in Apple thought it was a good idea to expose a naked metal antenna to fingers, pocket change, coins etc.? Finger contact not only reduces reception quality it also absorbs transmitter power meaning the TX stage has to increase its power levels to maintain contact with a cell tower in poor reception areas meaning a shorter battery life. Duh.

Crumbs. That sounds pretty good. You are amortizing the cost of buying the phone outright over 24 months...hmmm

May I ask how you bought the phone?

I've been thinking of going with Three no matter what I buy as I am fed up of T-Mobile.

Ah, I was confused by your mention of China.

Thanks

I'll look forward to seeing it, in part because I'm not convinced the ipad is for me.

Mine's on order for delivery after I get home. Same plan, except I have an unmetered cheap O2 contract which I shall stick with until they abolish unmetered plans in October (at which point I shall follow your example wrt. three).

I already sourced a leather case for $SHINY ...
