I think I don't understand the whole concept. I thought the whole point was that they were pretty spontaneous -- doesn't the whole publicity, organisation and general "everybody's aware of what's going on" thing totally defeat the object?

You might be interested to learn that the "flash mob" phenomenon made the national TV news here, albeit just a one of the end of news show "light" items.
