If you live in or near London, I recommend staying home today. Our severe weather warning has just been upgraded to a red emergency warning of 10-15cm of snow this afternoon, with up to 25cm locally. And there's a lot of snow coming down right now.

As the snow doesn't take any notice of man-made boundaries - we are in Essex (and therefore Eastern England) but just a few hundred yards from the Greater London Boundary, thank you for the update. The snow has just stared coming down hard.

I don't think I've ever seen red this far south before!

One of the technicians I work with comes from the Czech Republic and keeps calling us drama queens for being so upset by a little snow. She and her boyfriend are driving home for Xmas, someone asked about ice and of course it turns out that they have winter tyres fitted to their van as a matter of routine... I feel VERY unprepared, by comparison.

Some winter tyres are illegal in the UK.

London can't cope with 5mm how will the city manage with 25cm. I remember show falls of a meter back in Wales and life went on as normal.

So far pretty well, from the looks of things. Pavements are gradually being cleared, the railways seem to be running more or less normally, etc. Roads are a bit slippery but cars seem to be taking it slowly and carefully.

What is an ordinary snowfall by local standards, and how much starts to be "a lot"? 10" is inarguably Real Snow here (Chicago), but it shouldn't snarl things up for more than a day or so.
