Alice in Wonderland

Looks like I'll have to make a point of going to see Alice in Wonderland at a Cineworld (or maybe a Vue) in order to teach Odeon that it's none of their damn business how soon the DVD is available after the cinema release (except that they could make a lot more money selling DVDs to people leaving the cinema, so perhaps they should be campaigning for simultaneous release in cinemas and on DVD).

I'm not sure of the facts: doesn't it mean they get to play the films for 5 weeks less? Doesn't the studio withdraw the film from cinemas when the DVD is released, to get the highest possible DVD sales? That would make it very much Odeon's business...

It's very very unusual for a cinema to still be showing a film 12 weeks after it opens. There aren't any November 2009 releases still playing, for example. Avatar came out 9½ weeks ago, and might still be playing in another 2½ weeks, but it's the most commercially successful film of the decade.

No, what they want is to force people into the cinema by preventing them from seeing the film in any other way (except piracy, of course) for as long as possible, rather than actually putting some effort into making the cinema experience better than a DVD.

Also - when I go and see "Watchmen 2: Watch Harder" at the cinema, why on earth aren't they selling DVDs of "Watchmen" in the foyer???

Hmm, yeah I see your point. I guess when I see a squabble between anyone and Disney, especially relating to DVDs, I assume Disney is in the wrong...

So why is it none of their business? Why can't Odeon do what they like to try to maximise their profit? You think that Disney can, but Odeon can't. Why can't Disney, Odeon and Dr Plokta all do what the hell they like and we'll see how it eventually pans out?
